  • Saying X is bad for you (like coconut oil) is just committing the same mistake as the age old "cholesterol is bad for you". We don't know and we can't know if something is good or bad for you, unless we check for all the relevant variables, which is impossible, at least in this century probably.

    Praw August 19, 2017 7:44 AM Reply
    • Praw True, you could argue the AHA is just lying to us I guess. Not sure I would bet my health on a conspiracy theory though. Why would they American Heart Association lie?

      l August 19, 2017 3:16 PM Reply
    • Luke Lyons A fact: From mechanistic data we know that saturated fat and dietary cholesterol directly contribute to heart disease and atherosclerosis (in the specific case studies that were investigated, and possibly outside them) .Not a fact: Cholesterol is bad for you.Understand what I am getting at?Saying "Cholesterol is bad for you" is as bogus as saying "Bacteria are bad for you" or "Infections are bad for you", while there are tons of non-linearities and nuance in every different scenario, making the "good or bad" response be dependent on dosage, environment or any other of an inifinite amount of variables. You can always zoom in and take a fact that holds in a very very specific condition and say that it's a fact, but might not be relevant in a wider perspective. For example if something else cancels the destructive properties, makes you immune to them, or even gives you benefits, then you have either a bad assumption based on facts, or an irrelevant fact.

      Praw August 19, 2017 3:19 PM Reply
    • Lying implies knowing that what they're saying is wrong. I'd say they are possibly ignorant. Why would AHA be ignorant? Because in matters like this it is impossible to know 100% for sure, only give guidance. The more likely answer is that ignorant people interpret GUIDElines from AHA as rules, like they interpret substances that are SOMETIMES bad as substances that are always bad.

  • If you look at a chicken or a cow or a pig running around, and your mouth salivates you are an omnivore. Otherwise you are not. Humans also have intestines which are 20 feet long, which no omnivore has (meat eating animals have smaller intestines). Our hands and teeth are not made to rip flesh apart easily. We love animals, our first instinct is not to kill them. Simple logic and reasoning friends.

  • I hate when people say a "vegan" diet. It's a plant based diet. Being vegan is more than the way you eat. True vegans don't indulge in any animal products at all. No fur coats, no meat, no make up, nothing. Being vegan is not what is making the people in these documentaries healthy. It's the whole foods, plant based diets in combination with exercise. I myself still eat meat, but lean cuts. The rest of my nutrition is from fruits, vegetables, and starches. 20% protein, 20% fat, and 60% starchy carbs (potatoes, rice, vegetables, fruit, beans, etc.) and with exercise. I guarantee I'm healthier and look better than all of yall in the comments.

  • Humans are omnivores, like chimps. We are able to derive nourishment from all manner of flora and fauna. Individual preferences and physiological idiosyncracy allow us to derive what we need from more than one source. This makes sense since we live all over the globe, in different climates, with different flora/fauna environments. The word is adaptability. We can even survive on human flesh if needed, but thankfully our choices are rarely that limited!!

  • I may be a rare breed, I eat the foods that would make veganism possible, like the fermented and super foods mentioned and more, as well as meat, veggies, fruits and even the occasional processed food. This combination and range from the super healthy and natural to the regular and processed is good for the body's nutrient, chemical, protein and mineral receptors while building up the immune system by fighting the cancer-causing materials at a reasonable pace. Fermented foods are not as inconvenient as he says if you know your way around asian supermarkets. I also know Japanese and some included Chinese characters, so that helps.

Also the soil has become depleted so the fruit and vegetables don't have the same level of nutrients they once had; organic produce is somewhat better though since there are certain requirement to care for the soil.

  • There is nothing magical in animal products that is not there in plant based diet except cholesterol and fats. With that in mind we result that the only reason we kill 60billion animals per year is for our taste buds and that ruins the planet as well. The other guy is completely ignorant based on the joe-rogan type of anti vegan arguements that can be refuted in one google search.

  • Very interesting video. I think of veganism as a lifestyle motivated by kindness towards animals more so than just a diet. Usually vegans are not wearing leather, wool, etc.. or using cosmetics or toiletries with ingredients derived from animals or tested on animals. Also there are concerns of the effects of animal agriculture on the environment. Unfortunately there's a lot of vegan "junk food" out there. I don't think a vegan hot dog made with texturized soy protein is any healthier for you than one made with meat. No doubt it takes some effort to not become deficient. On another note I read a very interesting book about amino acids called "The Diet Cure" by Julia Ross. She also has another book called "The Mood Cure". She has good success with treating patients with all types of imbalances like depression, anxiety, drug addiction, anorexia, alcoholism compulsive eating; by balancing out their amino acids first with supplements but then gradually changing their diet so their amino acids become balanced from diet alone so they don't need to be on supplements long term. The book also talks about amino acids and vegetarianism and veganism; and like it was mentioned in this video; can become deficient in amino acids and result in cravings for sugar.

Now with youtube we have literally 1000s of amazing vegan recipes, you just have to go through them and do them. It can work without being insane or nasty tasting and you will be healthier in the end. You can still eat 5% or so of Joel Salatin type organic meats in your diet and still be fine as the groups in the world who have the best health had around 5% of that in their diet. I would still avoid all dairy though as that is for baby cows, not humans.
