Who is Warren Buffett?

Warren Edward Buffett (born August 30, 1930) is an American investor, business magnate, and philanthropist. He is considered by some to be one of the most successful investors in the world, and as of February 2017 is the second wealthiest person in the United States with a total net worth of $76.9 billion.

Born in Omaha, Buffet developed an interest in investing in his youth, eventually entering the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in 1947 before transferring and graduating from University of Nebraska–Lincoln. After graduating at 19, Buffet enrolled at Columbia Business School of Columbia University, learning and eventually creating his investment philosophy around a concept pioneered by Benjamin Graham–value investing. He attended New York Institute of Finance to specialize his economics background and soon after began various business partnerships, including one with Graham. After meeting Charlie Munger, Buffet created the Buffett Partnership. His firm would eventually acquire a textile manufacturing firm called Berkshire Hathaway and assume its name to create a diversified holding company.

Buffet has been the chairman and largest shareholder of Berkshire Hathaway since 1970, and his business exploits have had him referred to as the “Wizard”, “Oracle” or “Sage” of Omaha by global media outlets. He is noted for his adherence to value investing and for his personal frugality despite his immense wealth.

Such genuine, intelligent, practical advice… We are all pampered to the hilt, on his dime, in a luxury family environment and we go home feeling revived after fresh networking and focused on the latest financial & marketing techniques. None of his advice includes shady tactics. He is all about ethics. He is a modern man when it comes to his understanding of finances today. Because of him we connected with Houzz before it boomed and we are getting a lot of exposure there. Anyone can sit here and say negative things about his delivery…or that they want to skip through the lengthy talk…but I guarantee you, you will miss out.

  • There is another thing that absolutely predetermines whether you will fail or succeed in life, but is never talked about in these conferences, and it is your mental health. There can be an issue with your brain/mind that will 100% assure your failure, no matter how hard you try. Most people won't even realize or know it, until they waste most of their lives trying hard and failing, resulting in depression, divorces, drug addictions, even suicide. Evaluate youself, study youself, know youself, have a professional evaluate you, and do it periodically for the rest of your life.

The bus driver however sees the incoming collision and tries to avoid it. Doing so stops the collision from happening but causes the driver to lose control of the bus as it falls over on it's side, right onto the same sidewalk and curb that you and the poor man are unfortunately on. You have 2 seconds to react to the bus what could you do with the wealth that you own to prevent your fate being the same as that of the poor man sitting on the curb?

  • Regarding the question from the floor about problems youth will face in the future? Buffet said: “I don’t think you’re going to have economic problems. You’ll live in a society where the average person will live better by a significant margin! 53% of the public traded companies in the world exist in the United States!” Well Mr Buffet, the reason that they do exist in the US is because the military industrial complex gives them the “world’s Resources’ on a plate. I know because my country was invaded some years ago – it is now a “failed state” but the US helps itself to our Resources because it’s bankers put us into debt after destroying us – and this is the barrel over which they coerce us into handing over our resources. Slavery and colonialism in a highly refined form. You call that progress? I had to leave as a refugee and lost my family.

jon candelaria August 8, 2017 3:34 AM Reply
  • The main point he is making, which is a very valuable lesson, is that to be financially and personally successful you should put yourself in a position to maximise your god given talents whatever they may be. And the USA is probably still the only country in the world where you can do that and I totally believe in that.

    zcharg0 Harry August 7, 2017 1:25 PM Reply
    • I disagree, The main point he is making is obvious; `Don't get into debt` or `Be debt free`.I will never have been to the USA by the time I die. I'm South African. This is a personal decision, cos I am Muslim and you guys' Government obviously hates us and I don't want to go to Guantanamo bay just cos I share a name with a buncha top 10 most wanted "terrorists".I'm a 27 year old breadwinner with a wife and son and I am debt free, I know exactly what he's talking about. All smart people hold and practise this principle, where I learnt it from is neither here nor there, but it has become increasingly difficult to do soYou should definitely travel the world so that you can build your own true opinion of it

  • This comment section is weird. In it, I've seen people despise the rich, loathe their greed or their willingness to subdue their morality for financial security. In what sense is it bad to want wealth, at least inherently? Perhaps there is something to be learned from the rich on how to build wealth. Let's listen to a few examples of wealthy people- Warren Buffett, Mark Cuban, and Dave Ramsey, for instance. They all preach some basic tenants to build wealth- escape and avoid debt, constantly educate yourself, learn how to be professional and businesslike, and put more money into assets than liabilities (IRAs don't look as good as a leased BMW, amirite) are some basic tenants. Yeah, of course there are corrupt wealthy people. And also of course sometimes it is beyond an individuals fault that they remain impoverished- maybe they didn't receive these steps to wealth early enough, or maybe they face a serious handicap, or some other issue that truly limits them beyond their ability. And of course nobody can become wealthy off of minimum wage, the minimum wage is nowhere near enough to survive on. But, for most Americans and most citizens of the world (at least first world countries), the ability to build wealth and live comfortably is not only possible but easy if you dedicate your effort towards that goal. What gets measured gets managed.I'm a democrat, I respect the constrains government can enforce, but it is within the individual to secure onto themselves the 'blessings of liberty'. Buffett, Cuban, and Ramsey didn't steal their wealth, nor did they become overnight successes, and you probably can't nor won't either. But you can build wealth. The goal is within reach, but it requires hard work, knowledge, and above everything else, knowledge. Go on. Prove yourself. Do good things, make good choices.

  • I think the biggest mistake people make is assuming they need a University degree to be employable. Trade jobs are a staple to the economy and pay as well if not better than most jobs you'll find flat out of university and require the assumption of no debt. People don't account for all that time in university when they're living off borrowed money they are sacrificing earning potential and job experience and by the time they get out the market may not even have a need for their area of specialty so they'll have to assume a sub-standard post to make ends meet with all of that debt (on average $60k+). I would much rather have that money to invest with in my early twenties and retire young in my thirties living off passive income. NO ONE TOLD ME THIS WHEN I WAS EIGHTEEN BTW I HAD TO LEARN AT 23 AFTER WORKING HOSPITALITY AND STRUGGLING AS A STUDENT. I just wanted to add that in the United States, it seems that people respect wealth more than anything after a certain point (in your mid-twenties) when people are trying to nest and settle into something predictable. It makes your life better to have money and be decently educated than to be extremely educated and dirt poor. It sucks, but I've seen it. You'll have a much harder life unless you're just an incredibly charismatic and charming artist/person.

Bryce Clark August 16, 2017 7:26 AM Reply
    • Bryce Clark Yes, University education is a big trap. People are told that it is a key for a rich life. Most of those who has a University degree, however, are living with big depts. Their parents are living in big depts. If you think, who is the one that benefits this system (that parents must spendalmost all their life paing depts, working and hating their jobs, so little free time…)? Banks. This system is planned so that people are like little puppies in the hands of those who are actually using people's money. The money in the bank is people's money, not banks! It is an incredible business idea: give me your money and pay for me for it! And decades people have done it; given their money away and even pay for it! And of course, not only depts, but taxes… People are used as slaves. Higly manipulated to believe that this is a right way! University is indeed one trap! In question of money. Of course, professional education is different thing. But anyhow, it is just used to take people's money, to serve banks and whatever institutions, people pay and make themselves dept slaves. It is not all their fault: the system is planned to make people to take depts!

If you try saving for that car (and it takes years to save for a decent car) I guarantee that car will be long gone by time you get the money to pay cash for it so your best just to save up as big a down payment as absolutely possible and make sure your payments are affordable

  • What an absurd talk from supposedly a savvy investor/speculator. It's best not to have any debts in your life. Cash is still the most powerful. If you don't have enough cash to buy something, don't buy. Manage to do without. Or save enough money to buy it. Or use the old fashioned system, installment. Most importantly, learn to control your greed and wants. This kind of man is the evil one to create greed bigger and manipulate the stupid mass to believe his way is successful. He will have to die sooner or later, you know. Money may mean a lot to him, while others appreciate something totally different than money. Monetarily rich people are gullible and ugly spiritually. Whichever way you choose, you have to die one day sooner or later. Life is all about self-realization. If you have a dream or goal, achieve it. Money shouldn't be the first and atmost concern in one's life. If you live honestly and truthfully to yourself and others, monetary wealth follows you. That is the law of nature. I don't respect Warren Buffet, because he is a money-monger.

Do a little research and reading and studying instead vomiting the latest platitudes that you have to see everything as "all rich is evil" – that if you work hard to be successful is a bad thing. You're commenting on a Warren Buffet video. This guy didn't start as some rich asshole. He started poor, worked hard, became rich while helping others. It's easy to create problems where none exists. When did being "sixteen and pregnant " become something that was prime time , teen idol making entertainment ????The only way we turn this ship around is stop complaining about it – and start doing something about it ! • You should open a secured credit card account and only use it for necessities and pay it off every month. This will help build your credit. Credit plays a role in a lot of things. Especially if you have student loans, you are already realizing the need to borrow money to have the things in life that most people have. Every one I know that says they never got a credit card so they can stay out of debt still need to borrow money for car loans, rent, or mortgage at some point. You have to be super focused and not let others talk you into buying stuff you really don't need to be comfortable.

      MischievousMoo September 11, 2017 6:13 AM Reply
    • I wish he would have clarified a bit more as reckless use of credit is a major problem for consumers. Years ago, not using credit would have worked well… We no longer live in a time that you could buy, in most cases, homes, cars, open businesses without some access to capital (in the form of loans). The rrates and which you are charged for that us is determined by the banks using credit scores (most often). If you have access to private funds then this comment is irrelevant but if you need to go the commercial loan route, it will be in your best interest to build a solid credit history and using credit cards and paying it off timely makes the most since for right now.

kim simmons September 14, 2017 7:49 PM Reply
    • Right. I am building a credit score in case I need to rent a decent apartment. I just use my one card a little each month, paying it off each month. Many good apartments require a good score, even though you are not renting on credit. I get Soc. Sec., so I live on very little, but I have everything I need, just using the card enough to build the score.

They want you in debt in order to decide your value. STAY OUT OF DEBT!!! It's a trap! Better that you should save up your money FIRST, and be able to pay cash for what you really want later down the road, than "buy it now" and finance it the rest of your life away as a slave to the bank. THE BORROWER IS THE SLAVE TO THE LENDER. Always. Screw the credit score! Buy cheap crap now, save up your money, and buy something nice that you REALLY want later when you can actually afford it on your own!

Then became the CEO of Berkshire when he was 35.And he bought his first stock when he was 11. "By the age of 13, Buffett was running his own businesses as a paperboy and selling his own horseracing tip sheet.""During his high school tenure, he and a friend purchased a used pinball machine for $25. They installed it in a barbershop, and within a few months the profits enabled them to buy other machines. Buffett owned machines in three different locations before he sold the business for $1,200.""He phased out Berkshire Hathaway's manufacturing division, instead expanding the company by buying assets in media (The Washington Post), insurance (GEICO) and oil (Exxon).""Following Berkshire Hathaway's significant investment in Coca-Cola, Buffett became director of the company from 1989 until 2006. You have so many wealthy people who are going to die spoiled with money and actually never use it, or they have so much that they use it to do drugs, pay for upscale escorts, spend $30k on useless trophy hunting its ridiculous instead of taking all that money and making your community better by knocking on your struggling neighbors door who has potential to do great but just lacks the capital, why cant you as the rich person pay the neighbors debt and allow him to become successful then the community rids itself of that disease (being poor). STOP BEING GREEDY RICH FOLKS and pay off the poor peoples debt then educate them so they dont repeat the cycle.

  • A highly informative video with lots of pearls of wisdom. Yes, Warren states don't get a credit card and this is doable these days by having a debit card (where you use your own money in the bank) to support one to remain out of credit card debt. Sometimes as humans when people who are highly successful state the obvious, others want to cut them off at the limbs and/or dismiss the pearls of wisdom these highly successful people state. This video is as relevant today in 2017 as it was in 1999 or thereabouts. Some debt is hard to avoid i.e. a mortgage and/or student loan; yet Warren is dismissed for his pearls of wisdom re education and student loans. Honestly, these successful people give of their time to support as many younger and older people alike. One can either shoot the messenger or one can learn from the messenger – the choice is yours.

  • Not if you decide to give on the CC the money that is actually mine under the signature of the guvrement.
I used your CC to pay for the tools to make enough money to pay taxes.
What I mean is I pay with the credit for fuel, truck lease, food, office supplies, repair for the work trucks and the medical supplies, so I can keep going on working, and all are for to pay taxes, and part of the mentioned money are going towards taxes before I would get to the point of paying my personal taxes to the guvrement of the country I'm from.
So stop teling us to stop spending CC'S money.
